Hurricane Milton: The Anxiety Chronicles

October 8th is National Face Your Fears Day, and many Floridians are confronting that reality as Hurricane Milton approaches, less than 24 hours away. While the news is filled with alarming phrases like "explosive Category 5 hurricane," it only amplifies the anxiety of millions who already struggle with fear. Yet, in the midst of this, we must remember who is in control of the storm.

"You rule over the surging sea; when its waves mount up, you still them." Psalm 89:9

"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you." Isaiah 43:2

"The Lord is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him." Nahum 1:7

The prophet Haggai had a word for the Israelites when they were focused on beautifying their homes and lives. They had the best decor, the latest tech, and endless feasts, but Haggai called them to take a hard look at their priorities He said, “You’ve spent so much, yet have little to show for it. You keep filling your plates, but you’re never satisfied. You drink endlessly, but remain thirsty. You pile on clothes, but still feel cold” (Haggai 1:5-7).

God’s message was clear: While they were consumed with their own homes, His house was in ruins. Today, His temple is within us, our bodies. We invest so much in outward appearances, but often neglect our inner temple. God owns all the silver and gold, but His true desire is to fill His temple with wholeness, holiness, and peace. The Israelites, like many of us, were contaminated by half-hearted efforts and disobedience, which left them with anxious hearts and restless minds.

Our anxiety often stems from a “contaminated heart,” but God promises that if we rebuild and turn back to Him, He will shake the very foundations of what troubles us. He will dismantle the enemies, both seen and unseen, that disrupt our peace, and give us freedom.

God is more powerful than this storm. He parted the Red Sea and made a way where there was none. As you prepare for the storm, remember who is with you. We invest so much in our homes and appearances but often neglect His home within us. If we give only five minutes to our inner spiritual health, we shouldn’t be surprised when we lack peace. To truly feel His presence, we need to spend time with Him—more than just a quick devotional.

As the storm nears, open His Word, seek His presence, and thank Him for what He’s already done in your life. Gratitude before the storm decorates our soul with light, pushing back the darkness. Stay safe and always know you are loved.
